PURPOSE:To reduce the installing area by furnishing an engine and a generator at the upper side and at the lower side, and a heat exchanger to recover the waste heat at the downward extention of an exhaust pipe, in a power generating unit in which a generator is driven by an engine and the waste heat produced in the power generation is recovered. CONSTITUTION:At the lowermost position of a case 3 which is a longish rectangular parallelepiped form as a whole, a generator 5 is disposed, and just above the generator 5, an engine 7 is disposed, by which the generator 5 is driven through a belt 15 and the like. And at the upper side position of the engine 7, or the uppermost position of the case 3, a control unit 9 for controlling and various displays is arranged. The exhaust pipe 17 of the engine 7 is extended horizontally from the upper side of the engine 7 to the side of the case 3, from where it is extended downward almost vertically, and its tip side is arranged to contact a muffler 19 which is disposed horizontal to the bottom surface of the case. And around the outer periphery of the vertical part 17a of the exhaust pipe 17, a heat exchanger 21 is installed to recover the waste heat.
