[Also in Divisions D1 and F2] A fibrous assembly is bonded in a pattern of spaced binder areas by passing the fabric through a pressure nip which comprises a bonding member heated to a temperature below the softening temperature of thermoplastic material in the fabric. The bonding member has a surface with 50-1000 projections/sq. ins. thereon, the tips of the projections having a crosssectional area of 1 Î 10<SP>-5</SP> to 5 Î 10<SP>-4</SP> sq. ins. (producing bonded areas of 1 Î 10<SP>-5</SP>-1 Î 10<SP>-3</SP> sq. ins.), and 1-10% of the total area of the bonding member comprising the projection tips. The projections can have a length, e.g. 0À02- 0À10 ins., such that the surface of the bonding member between the projections does not exert pressure. The projections can have an angle between their sides of from 0-100 degrees. The projection tips can be domed or flat. The projections may penetrate the fabric to a depth of 50-98% of the fabric thickness. The fibres in the assembly may be staple fibres or continuous filaments and may be crimped. The fibres may be made of cotton, wool, polyamides, polyesters or blends thereof. The fibres may comprise at least two polymer components. The fibrous assembly can be a non-woven fabric which may be air laid and can be needled prior to bonding. Alternatively, the fibrous assembly may comprise a plurality of layers which are to be bonded together, or the fibrous assembly may be bonded to a non-fibrous assembly or incorporate a scrim, or it may comprise two woven fabrics containing different fibres which are bonded together.
