PURPOSE:To easily detect a misread character by overlapping and displaying a character pattern generated by a character pattern generation means and the character pattern of a picture memory. CONSTITUTION:A recording medium 1 loaded on a character reader 2 is stored in the picture memory 41 after applying scanning, photoelectric conversion and quantization of a scan/photoelectric conversion part 3. The picture pattern in the memory 41 is segmented by a character segment part 42 and is inputted to an identification part 5. A character identification part 51 discriminates the category of the segmented character pattern, and the result is stored in a storage part 61 in a confirmation correction part 6. The correction part 6 reads information on an identification result from the storage part 61, and the character pattern is segmented by the 42, selects the character pattern corresponding to a character font identifying and understanding result by a font identifying and understanding part 52 among a character generation part 63, overlaps two character patterns and displays them in a display part 64. Thus, the detection of misread characters is facilitated.
