PURPOSE:To print either first or second character pattern according to a first character pattern designating command without any modification in software, by providing a switching means for switching the first character patterns and the second character patterns from one to the other. CONSTITUTION:When an NLQ character designating command is inputted from a host device 11 during DRAFT printing, a controlling part 10 detects the status of an NLQ/LQ character changeover SW 17, thereby discriminating whether the SW 17 is on the NLQ character side or on the LQ character side, and when the LQ characters are selected, the controlling part 10 discriminates whether the printer is in an online state or in an offline state. When the printer is in the online state, printing in LQ characters is conducted, whereas when the printer is in the offline state, a jump is made to detect the status of the SW 17. When it is found that NLQ characters are selected, it is discriminated whether the printer is in the online state or in the offline state, in the same manner as where the LQ characters are selected, and when the printer is in the online state, printing in NLQ characters is conducted.
