A cathode-ray tube includes a shadow mask (62) having an array of apertures (70) mounted adjacent a substantially rectangular faceplate panel (14) with curvature along major (X) and minor (Y) axes orthogonal to each other and to a central longitudinal axis (Z) passing through the center of the faceplate panel. The shadow mask has a border (64) of varying width disposed between the perimeter (68) of the apertured array and a bend line (66) adjoining a peripheral mask skirt (74) which substantially parallels the central axis and is supported by a shadow-mask frame (76) oriented orthogonally to the central axis. The width (B) of the border is narrowest at the major axis, preferably being no greater than five percent of the distance from the minor axis to the bend line along the major axis.
