An apparatus for skinning and compacting sausage casings comprises a mandrel and shirring means for shirring the casing on the mandrel, mean for severing a predetermined length of the shirred casing and advancing the severed length along the mandrel to a compacting station, and means at said compacting station for compressing the severed length axially to a predetermined shorter length, the means for severing a predetermined length of the casing and the means for advancing the severed length comprising a pair of carriages disposed normally at opposite ends of said mandrel, means for causing each of the carriages simultaneously to be advanced toward the centre of the mandrel, and spring means for returning each of the carriages to their original position. Means for injecting lubricating fluid into the casing may be provided. |
