PURPOSE:To enhance durability at high temp. in a catalyst for oxidation wherein Pd and/or PdO is used as an active component and Pt, Pt alloy or Pt dispersed and reinforced with oxide is used as a carrier by providing a PdTiO-type composite oxide layer as an intermediate layer between the active component layer and the carrier. CONSTITUTION:Heat resistant metal such as Pt, Pt alloy or Pt alloy dispersed and reinforced with oxide is used as a carrier 8. A PdTiO-type composite oxide layer 11 is formed as an intermediate layer on the carrier 8. Then a catalyst for oxidation is obtained by making Pd, PdO or these mixtures as an active component 12 to be carried by the composite oxide layer 11. Even when this catalyst is exposed to the high-temp. oxidizing atmosphere at 600-1,500 deg.C, the composite oxide layer 11 is not alloyed with the metal carrier 8 and also the active component 12 is not diffused to the composite oxide layer 11 and therefore the use of a long period at high temp. is enabled. Further the contents of Ti and O incorporated in composite oxide are preferably regulated to 10-50wt.% and 3.3-16.7wt.% respectively for Pd.
