PURPOSE:To obtain a perpendicular magnetic recording medium which has high practicability and can deal with high-density recording by specifying the conditions of a supporting substrate, underlying layers, recording layers, protective layers and lubricating layers. CONSTITUTION:This recording medium is constituted by forming the underlying layers 2, the recording layers 3, the protective film layers 4 and the lubricating layers 5 successively on the supporting substrate 1. The substrate 1 is a high- polymer film having 300-1,000kgf/mm<2> Young's modulus, <=0.02mum surface roughness Rmax and >10<4> pieces/mm<2> filter packing density. The underlying layers 2 consist of a 'Permalloy(R)' film having 8-20(Oe) coercive force in the intra-surface direction and 0.3-0.5mum film thickness. The recording layers 3 consist of a Co-Cr alloy film having <=0.2mum film thickness and >=400(Oe) coercive force in the perpendicular direction. The protective layers 4 consist of an inorg. oxide film having >=700 Vickers hardness and <=0.02mum film thickness and the lubricating layers 5 consist of fluorocarbon having a polar group. Upgrading of the perpendicular magnetic recording medium adequate for the high-density recording up to a practical level is thereby permitted. |
