PURPOSE:To enable printing correctly on both sides of a booklet which opens to both sides by energizing the first and second pieces in a direction in which they are caused to contact a reference guide under pressure and connecting a platen to a control means which selectively sets a subdivision area and a smoothing area to a position in which these areas are opposed to a reference guide in accordance with the type of a printing medium. CONSTITUTION:A platen 36 is set by a control means to a reference guide 63 so that the first and second pieces 40, 41 of a subdivision area 38 may be opposed to each other. Under this state, a booklet which opens to both sides 4 is set in such a way that its bound part is inserted into a space 43 between the first and second pieces in a printing part 35. Besides, the first and second pieces 40, 41 press right and left papers to the reference guide 63 in accordance with a level difference between the right and left papers of the booklet which opens to both sides 4 and consequently, these papers are attached closely together. At that time, the thick parts of the right and left papers are pressed by the first and second pieces 40, 41 with a powerful force,and the thin parts by a weak force. Thus the papers are caused to make contact with the reference guide 63 under pressure regardless of the level difference between right and left papers of the booklet. This eliminates the necessity of providing a mechanism to identify the number of pages of the booklet which opens to both sides 4 or control means and enables correct printing of the booklet 4 by the printing part 35.
