PURPOSE:To make it possible to produce a fine metallic oxide having extremely high purity at low cost without requiring a specific purifying means, by using a metal of the target metallic oxide as an anode and an aqueous solution of an organic acid as an electrolyte, carrying out electrolysis and calcining the prepared organometallic acid salt. CONSTITUTION:In an electrolytic cell wherein a metal is used as an anode and a cathode is partitioned by a separating membrane and positioned, an aqueous solution of an organic acid and/or an organic salt is used as an electrolyte, electrolysis is carried out and the anode metal is dissolved to form a metallic ion solution. Then the metallic ion solution is concentrated to give an organometallic acid salt and the organometallic acid salt is calcined. Especially transition metal, metal of group IIIB, group IVB, group VB, etc., may be cited as the metal used as the anode. Acetic acid, formic acid, oxalic acid, citric acid, malonic acid, etc., and ammonium salts thereof are preferable as the organic acid and/or the organic salt.
