PURPOSE:To automatically detect the misspellings of KATAKANA (square form of Japanese syllabary) science/technology terms, by using a KATAKANA spelling dictionary and a KATAKANA spelling check mechanism. CONSTITUTION:A word processor contains a KATAKANA spelling check mechanism 1 which searches the KATAKANA spelling in document data 3 to be checked and collates these spellings with a KATAKANA spelling dictionary 2. The mechanism 1 gives information to a user via an output mechanism 4 in case no corresponding KATAKANA spelling is obtained from said collation given with the dictionary 2 and acquires relevant countermeasures through a KATAKANA spelling check function. Thus the mechanism 1 includes a KATAKNA spelling searching function to search the KATAKANA spelling out of the document 3 and a KATAKANA spelling dictionary editing function to give addition and deletion of the KATAKANA spelling to the dictionary 2 in addition to said spelling check function. In such constitution, it is possible to offer such a word processor that contains the KATAKANA spelling check function to a producer of the documents using frequently the KATAKANA spellings of the science and technology fields, etc.
