A polyester resin is prepared by neutralizing with NH3 or an amine a condensate, having an OH number of 25-200 and an acid number of 25-100 derived from a polyvalent acid component and a polyol, the polybasic acid component containing at least a dibasic acid and 10 mole per cent of an acid of basicity greater than 2 or an anhydride of such an acid. Drying or non-drying oils, oil fatty acids or resin acids may be added during preparation. Pigments and/or water-soluble urea-, melamine- or phenolformaldehyde resins may be added to the product. Driers may be added to the products containing unsaturated fatty acid residues. The products may be used as coating compositions, impregnants and adhesives. Acids of basicity greater than 2 specified are: trimellitic, hemimellitic, pyromellitic and citric and malenized unsaturated fatty acids, e.g. soya oil fatty acid, and colophony. Dibasic acids specified are: phthalic, isophthalic, adipic, succinic, azelaic and sebacic. Polyols specified are: ethylene glycol, propane diol, glycerol, pentaerythritol, neopentyl glycol and the monoglyceride of soya oil fatty acid. Amines specified are NMe3 and NEt3. |
