If a man falls overboard in even a slight sea, after a short time he is no longer visible from the water or a ship because of the waves. A rescue operation often fails for this reason. The device is intended to permit locating an object that has gone overboard even in very rough seas. The device includes an inflatable display body that is connected by a line or the like to a mounting that can be fastened to the object, and a pressure vessel filled with a lighter-than-air pressure medium with a controllable discharge valve, to which the display body is detachably connected for inflation by a locking device (after a predetermined pressure drop in the pressure vessel, the locking device is in the release position), and a triggering device which releases the discharge valve of the pressure vessel when triggered. This device enables objects floating in the water to be located even from a considerable distance.
