PURPOSE:To accurately detect the movement of clod, the moving quantity thereof and the moving direction thereof, by connecting steel pipes by universal joints. CONSTITUTION:A hole is digged in a place sewing as an object to be monitored by a boring machine to know the depth of a foundation 500. This hole is dug down to the foundation 500 and a clinometer is inserted in the hole. Therefore, the steel pipe 100 at the lowermost part of the clinometer is supported by the foundation 500. Thereafter, the space between the inner wall of the hole and the pipe 100 is filled with a grout material 600 to fix the posture of the clinometer. As the grout material 600, soil suitable for the hardness of a clod 700 to be made compatible with the clinometer so as to make it possible to accurately transmit the movement of the clod 700 to the clinometer. When the clod 700 begins to slide, the pipes 100 of the clinometer are bent at the parts of the universal joints 200 to change to the posture shown by a dotted line. This change of the posture can be measured on the basis of the inclination detection signals sent from the sensors 401, 402 received in each pipe 100. The positions of the upper and lower ends of the pipe 100 are calculated from the inclination and the length of the pipe 100 according to a predetermined formula.
