Oily sludges containing volatile hydrocarbons are mixed with diatomaceous earth or perlite in a system which includes an indirect dryer (24) for vaporizing liquids have a boiling point of less than about 700 DEG F. Dried solids are discharged from the dryer (24) and conveyed to an oxidation unit comprising a rotary kiln (40) or lift pipe combustor (42).
