A locking device, especially adapted for a pivotable cover (10) of a vacuum cleaner, comprises at least one locking catch (12) which engages a complementary locking means (13) in order to lock the cover in closed position. According to the invention the catch is provided with an electric contact means (15) which during the closing of the cover abuts a corresponding contact means (17) in order to close an electric circuit.
