[Also in Division C7] A flux for one sided butt welding of steel comprises slagging agents and 0À5-7% weight of a "heat melting" type thermosetting resin, the flux conforming to the configuration of the under surface of the steel during welding. The flux may contain 10-90% Fe, 3-20% deoxidizers such as Si, Mn, Al, Ti, Zr, Mg, Ca or their ferro alloys. The resin may be a phenolic, epoxy, urea or xylene type and the slagging agents TiO 2 > 12%, SiO 2 <25%, MgO <20%, ZrO 2 <20%, CaF 2 < 10%, Al 2 O 3 or CaO. Preferred flux contains 12-35% TiO 2 , 20-70% Fe, 3-20% deoxidizers, 0À5-7% resin. Resin is added to mixed powders with methyl alcohol, dried and screened minus 10 mesh. These may be a powder or a solid heat set by the resin. Many specific flux compositions are disclosed as well as submerged-arc, carbonic acid-shielded, gas shielded and manual processes using the flux. |
