PURPOSE:To provide the titled resin containing a specific flexible polymer segment in the main chain, having a specific anionic hydrophilic group introduced into terminal epoxy group, and useful for self-emulsifiable reactive emulsifier, a resin for water-based paint, a resin for electrodeposition paint, etc. CONSTITUTION:The objective resin is derived from an epoxy resin having an epoxy equivalent of 100-6,000, contains a side-chain bonded block of formula I (R1 and R2 are H or methyl; A is ether bond, ester bond, etc.; B is linear polymer block having a molecular weight of 100-7,000; Y is OH, amino, carboxyl, etc.) in the main chain and has at least one terminal of main chain converted to an acid group of formula II (X is residue of polyfunctional carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid or phosphoric acid compound having active hydrogen reactive with epoxy group) or its salt. The resin can be produced e.g. by introducing side chain to an alcoholic hydroxyl group in the main chain of an epoxy resin e.g. by ring-opening polymerization and introducing an anionic hydrophilic group by the ring-opening of the epoxy group at a terminal of the main chain.
