With a view to reducing the specific usage of energy for the manufacture of aluminium, the voltage drop in the prebaked anodes is reduced: 1- by lowering the electrical resistance by the creation of preferential circuits consisting of cast aluminium shunts in housings formed in the carbon of the blocks constituting the anode elements. These shunts can divert the current in various ways; 2- by reducing to a minimum the thickness of carbon protecting the underneath of the rods for delivering current when the use of the elements comes to an end. For this purpose the steel rods are lowered as a function of the height of the electrolysis bath and are protected by borders formed in the upper part of the carbon blocks.
