A thin-film multitrack head is provided having wear-guide indicators which continuously provide full substrate support despite gradual wear-out of the head. The wear-guide indicators, at least in the vicinity of the core gap regions, are generally rectangular in shape, each having an angled slot extending across it. While looking down at the gap line of the head, the slot of each wear-guide indicator appears as a discontinuity at the medium contacting surface of the wear-guide indicator. As the head in question wears out, the wear-guide indicators retain their substrate-supporting between-core dimensions, albeit that the edge discontinuity of each wear-guide indicator appears to move, like a "pointer", in the direction of core-to-core spacing, thereby indicating the depths of the head core gaps. |
