To prevent an unwanted sliding movement of the inner and outer races (6, 7) of a rolling bearing (5) on the bearing seat of the axle or shaft (1) or in the bearing housing (8) while nevertheless permitting an axial compensating movement, an annular groove (2) is provided on the axle or shaft (1) or in the bearing housing (8) in the region of the bearing seat and into this annular groove is inserted an elastic ring (3). Measures are taken which ensure that the elastic ring (3) protrudes beyond the shaft (1) or the bearing housing (8) over part of the groove circumference until the rolling bearing (5) is installed. With the rolling bearing (5) installed, the protruding part of the elastic ring (3) is forced into the annular groove (2) and a radial force is thus exerted on the rolling bearing (5). <IMAGE>
