A mixer has a cylindrical container 1 with inlet and outlet 2, 3 and a stirrer in the form of a single simple helical coil 4 which may be a continuation of the shaft 6 or may be unsupported by a shaft and/or have one free end; it may be resilient and of circular, square or rectangular cross-section. Solids may be supplied by a shoot 13 and conveyer 14 and liquids through a ring manifold 10 and a valve 11 which may be controlled by a timer 12 for mixing or flushing purposes. The stirrer is rotated at a peripheral speed sufficient to fluidize the material, not less than 2 m/sec and preferably 4 m/sec. |
