A machine tool worktable has a drive for rotatably driving the table, and a drive for rotatably indexing the table. The table 10, Fig. 3, is rotatably mounted in a base 36, 37, and an extension 41 of the table carries a gearwheel 51 which meshes with a gear-wheel 53 connected to an indexing electric motor 48 through a clutch 54, and also meshes with a gearwheel 57 connected to a driving motor 56. Three pins 21 for locking the table in an indexed position and supporting the table are provided, each of which is actuated against the action of a spring 104, so as to release the table, by a piston 106 and lever 101. A switch 109 is operated by lever 101, and provides a signal for indicating the position of pin 21. In one application of the worktable nine work-holders 12, Fig. 1, are indexed to work stations 16, with a loading station 13, and an unloading station 14 being provided. A central power drive 17 is provided, and operates a clutch member 18, Fig. 4, which co-operates with a clutch member 127, Fig. 9, on each work holder when at the loading station, and also drives a second clutch member 19, Fig. 4, at the unloading station. The drive to clutch members 18, 19, is provided by a motor 74, Fig. 3, through a gear-box 73, a clutch 72, and a drive-shaft 71. Each of the work holders 12, Fig. 9, comprises a holder 122, having a screwed extension 126 for the work secured to a spindle 121. Clutch member 127 is splined to spindle 121, and is moved into engagement with clutch members 18, 19, by a piston 138 and rocker arm 139. In another application of the table, Fig. 2, the workpiece 11 is rotated by the table so that faces 27 are turned by tool 26. The table is then indexed so that the tools 28a, 28b and 28c can operate on the face 23. |
