For determining the degree ( eta ) of conversion of an exhaust gas catalyst (3) built into the exhaust gas conduit (4) of an internal combustion engine (1), a programmable control unit for generating preset rotational speed sequences of the internal combustion engine (1) is integrated into an electronic control and/or regulation device (2) of the engine (1), which device is provided with a change-over switch (8) for switching over between normal engine operation and determination of the degree ( eta ) of conversion (Fig. 2).
