A web (11) of parallel carbon or carbon fibre precursor threads is supported with a base layer (10) of a volatile support material and needled thereto. The volatile support material is then destroyed so that displaced or broken sections (12) of the threads, which are bonded together, remain behind to form a stable web with which mixtures, in particular reinforcements for carbon/carbon compositions, can be produced.
