PURPOSE:To obtain a high-concentration and low-viscosity varnish which gives a polyimide film having an excellent effect of producing a smooth coated surface through heat treatment, by synthesis from a diamine, a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, and a specified dicarboxylic acid. CONSTITUTION:A varnish obtained by synthesis in an organic solvent from a diamine, a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride, and a dicarboxylic acid having carboxylic groups adjacent to an amino group in the molecule or its ester compound. A useful organic solvent is an organic polar solvent capable of dissolving those three reactants and a produced polyamic acid. For instance, the synthesis is carried out in a solution of, e.g., N-methylpyrrolidone or dimethylformamide at 0-80 deg.C. An aromatic monomer comprising a dicarboxylic acid may be used because of its excellent heat resistance.
