<p>A process for preparing compost from sewage solids comprising a first stage for aerobic absorption of sewage solids, water and a source of nitrogen into cellulosic material, and a second stage comprising compressing the initial mixture into a compressed aerobic mass and subjecting the compressed mass to aerobic composting at a temperature of at least 70 DEG C for at least 3 days. The C : N ratio in the first stage is from 30 : 1 to 40 : 1 and the C : N ratio of the final product is less than 20 : 1. The C : N ratio, the pH and the moisture content are monitored in the first stage and one or more of a source of water, a source of acidity or alkalinity and a source of nitrogen may be added. The second stage may be conducted in a heap having a covering of thin plastic sheet material which defines vents and air inlets.</p> |
