Plastics surface of a substrate is treated with a solution of white or yellow phosphorus dissolved in a solvent to deposit phosphorus. The treated surface may be treated with a metal salt or complex capable of reacting with phosphorus to form a metal phosphide as described in Specification 1,221,111, and then plated with metals by electroless and/or electrolytic plating methods. An extensive list of polymers which may be treated is provided. The polymers can be filled with glass fibre/powder/ beads, asbestos, talc, wood flow, carbon, dyes, pigment, wax.
