The invention relates to a method by means of which periodic loads - which only need to be supplied at time intervals - are subdivided into predetermined groups and subgroups. This avoids or reduces peak loading of the distribution system due to the fact that the loads are connected step by step to the distribution system. An address is allocated to each subgroup. The loads of one subgroup are controlled by audio-frequency code telemessages which contain both the address of the loads to be controlled and the control command to be executed. Code messages are superimposed on the power system voltage by an audio frequency control centre. The code telemessages preferably contain 50 clock pulses and in each case contain a start signal and a combination of signals and signal blanks allocated to predetermined clock pulses.
