In a safety razor having a blade support platform and a blade guard structure, the latter extending in generally parallel spaced relation to the front edge of the blade support platform, the blade guard structure includes a flexible portion having a first position of predetermined spacing from the front edge of the blade support platform when the razor is not in use so that the edge of a sharpened blade disposed on the platform has a first exposure, and a range of dynamic second and further positions closer to the front edge of the platform than the first position, the range including a dynamic position in which the blade exposure is double the first exposure, the flexible portion being sufficiently resilient to move from the first position along a path generally parallel to the plane of the blade to any of the dynamic positions under the corresponding influence of the force with which the razor is pressed against the user's face during a shaving stroke and to return to the first position upon completion of the shaving stroke. Preferably, the first exposure is less than 0À003 inch, and the flexible portion of the guard structure has a thickness in the plane of the blade of the order of 0À05 inch. The guard structure and the platform may be a single unit of synthetic organic polymeric material. The shaving geometry dynamic characteristic, e.g. exposure or tangent angle, is substantially linear as a function of pressure over the range of dynamic positions. In one form, a ribbon type razor comprises a blade support platform 42, Fig. 3, and hold-down elements 44. Below and forwardly of the platform 42 is a guard 60 having end portions 62, 64 integral with base 34. Stop member 66 protrudes from guard 60 towards a surface 46. In another form, the razor comprises handle 100, Fig. 5, blade support member 102 and cap 104. Member 102 has exposed on each side of the body 120 thereof a guard bar 122 which is secured to the body by webs 124 which extend from the body. Located equidistantly from the webs 124 is a stop 126. |
