PURPOSE:To improve durability at transmitting section by regulating the pressure of working oil to be fed to a second hydraulic servo through a second pressure regulator so that transmission torque of a hydraulic friction engaging device will be lower than the transmission torque of a continuously variable transmission being determined corresponding to the gripping force of a drive band. CONSTITUTION:Supply/discharge timing of pressure oil to/from hydraulic servoes 48, 49 in a planetary gear transmission 40 is adjusted through function of a solenoid valve being controlled by an output from an electrical control circuit so as to prevent shifting impact. At the same time, upper limit of pressure oil to be fed to the hydraulic servoes 48, 49 is set lower than the line pressure through function of a pressure limiting valve. Since a multi-board brake and multi-board clutches 42, 45 slide reliably upon provision of an excessive torque, slip between a V-belt 33 and pulleys 31, 32 is prevented even upon provision of excessive torque, resulting in the improvement of durability of V-belt 33 and pulleys 31, 32.
