PURPOSE:To separate a desired high-purity rare earth element in high selectivity, by bringing a mixed aqueous solution containing specific two or more rare earth elements and a complexing agent into contact with a phosphoric acid ester under special condition. CONSTITUTION:A mixed aqueous solution at pH>=1.5 containing 0.005-2mol/l two or more rare earth elements selected from atomic numbers of 39 and 57-71 and a complexing agent, e.g. ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, in an equivalent amount of 0.1-1.5 times based on the rare earth ions is brought into contact with an organic diluent, e.g. kerosene, containing 0.1-3.0mol/l phosphoric acid ester, e.g. di-2-ethylhexyl phosphate, under conditions of formulas I-III to selectively extract and separate a specific rare earth element from other rare earth elements in the above-mentioned rare earth elements.
