PURPOSE:To obtain an antitumor agent containing dead bacterial cells of Vibrio cholerae or treated materials thereof. CONSTITUTION:An antitumor agent obtained by inoculating Vibrio cholerae in an agar culture medium (1,000ml beef bouillon, 10g peptone, 5g sodium chloride and 30g agar), cultivating at 37 deg.C for 18-20hr, floating the grown bacterial cells in a phosphate buffered saline solution, sterilizing the solution while heating at 56 deg.C for 30min, adding phenol or thimerosal (preservative) to provide dead bacterial cells of the Vibrio cholerae and containing the above-mentioned dead bacterial cells of the Vibrio cholerae or treated materials thereof as an active ingredient. The dose thereof is 1X10<6>-1X10<10> dead bacterial cells of the Vibrio cholerae or 0.001-10mg treated materials of the dead bacterial cells for an adult (60kg) and has antitumor and remedial effects by injection thereof. This agent is not only safe as compared with that of conventional methods using exotoxin of the Vibrio cholerae but also the antitumor effects thereof are excellent.
