PURPOSE:To obtain the titled copolymer having excellent thermal dimensional stability, flexibility, heat-resistance, etc., by polymerizing a mixture of a specific aromatic diamine components and pyrometallitic dianhydride and subjecting the resultant aromatic polyamide copolymer to dehydrative cyclization (imidation). CONSTITUTION:A mixture of aromatic diamine components containing 20-90mol.% p-phenylenediamine and 10-80mol.% 4,4'-diaminodiphenyl ether is polymerized together with essentially equimolar amount of pyromellitic dianhydride and the resultant aromatic polyamide copolymer is subjected to thermal or chemical dehydrative cyclization (imidation) reaction to obtain the objective copolymer containing the recurring unit of formula I or formula II.
