PURPOSE:To optimize the quantity of a main storage assigned to a working set by increasing the working set size of a process when pages removed from the working set are left in a main storage device and decreasing the working set size when they are not left. CONSTITUTION:A probability in which the pages removed from the working set are left in the main storage device 1 is low because a time until they are referred again is lengthened when the working set is completely large. In the case of the reverse, a referred time is shortened and the probability in which the pages are left in the device 1 is large. When the multiplicity of the process is high and the quantity of the main storage which can be used by the processing is likely to deficient, since the pages are easily used for another use, the probability in which the pages are left in the device 1 is low. In the case of the reverse, when the removed pages are referred again, if they are left in the device 1, the working set size is increased. In the case of the reverse, the working set size is decreased, adjusted to optimize the quantity of the main storage assigned to the process.
