PURPOSE:To obtain a terminating agent for polyimide, which can give a PMR type polyimide which gives a varnish excellent in storage stability, heat resistance, strength, etc., comprising a specified Nadic acid derivative. CONSTITUTION:A Nadic acid derivative of formula I is used as a terminating agent for polyimide. The compound of formula I can be produced by, for example, a process comprising reacting Nadic acid anhydride with nitroaniline in an acetamide solution to synthesize Nadiimidenitrobenzene and reducing this compound with stannous chloride. A composite material excellent in bending strength, etc. can be obtained by impregnating a reinforcing fiber with a PMR type polyimide varnish comprising the terminating agent of formula I, a dialkyl tetracarboxylate of formula II and a diamine of formula III (wherein R1 and R2 are each CH2, O, CO, SO2, S, a direct bond, etc., and X is a 1-4C alkyl), laminating the obtained prepregs and curing the laminate.
