PURPOSE:To easily grasp the amount of retrieval without displaying successively retrieving results by displaying the number of head words and bilinguals coincident with or related to input character strings. CONSTITUTION:An electronic dictionary main body 1 contains a keyboard 4 including a group 2 of function keys and a group 3 of function keys provided at its front side and a display device 8 including display parts 5 and 6 set on the upper and lower columns and a display part 7 displaying the operating states. When the instructions of translation are received via the function keys 3, English headwords equal or related to input English words are retrieved together with Japanese equivalents, i.e., the results of translation. For these retrieving results, the headwords are displayed at the part 5 of the upper column together with the bilinguals displayed at the part 6 of the lower tier and the number N of headwords and the number M of equivalents of headwords displayed at the part 7 respectively. Thus an operator can easily grasp the number of retrieved words.
