PURPOSE:To efficiently burn powdery combustible matter and to smoothly discharge noncombustible matter to the outside of a furnace, by connecting an injection nozzle, which injects a mixture of powdery combustible matter and gas, being heated to high temperature by partial combustion in an auxiliary combustion furnace, into the furnace body at high velocity, to the furnace body along the tangential direction of it. CONSTITUTION:When a powdery combustible matter is burned, first a heavy oil is burned in an auxiliary furnace 25 by feeding the oil through a heavy oil feed pipe 29 and an air through an air feed pipe 30 to an auxiliary burner 31. Combustion gas is injected into a furnace body 20 by an injection nozzle 27 to heighten the temperature up to the temperature enough to melt noncombustible matter contained in the powdery combustible matter and to drip it down along the inside of a furnace body 20. Then the auxiliary burner 31 is stopped burning and the powdery combustible matter is fed into the auxiliary furnace 25 from a fuel feed port 28 by air conveyance. Part of content of high combustion velocity out of sludge is burned in the auxiliary furnace 25, and the powdery sludge which is partially burned is injected into the furnace body 20 together with gas from the injection nozzle 27. A mixture moves along the wall of a furnace body as a swirling flow of high velocity, and fine particles out of sludge particles are burned in the highly heated air flow. The noncombustible matter is melted and drips, falling into a slug cooling facility through a melt fall port 23.
