PURPOSE:To obtain an Al alloy for contact parts for magnetic tape excellent in resistance to wear by tape, reduced in friction coefficient, and also excellent in machinability, by specifying a composition consisting of Zn, Si, Cu, Mg, Pb, Sn, and Al. CONSTITUTION:The Al alloy for contact parts for magnetic tape excellent in machinability has a composition consisting of, by weight, 0.3-1.5% Zn, 4.6-12.0% Si, 1.5-50% Cu, 0.2-1.5% Mg, 0.2-0.8% Pb, 0.2-1.5% Sn, and the balance essentially Al and further containing, if necessary, <=0.7% Fe and/or <=0.7% Mn and <=0.2% Ti and/or <=0.2% Zr. This alloy is also excellent in resistance to wear by tape and reduced in coefficient of friction with tape. Moreover, the above Al alloy has superior chip breakability and contributes toward improvement in efficiency at the time of machining and also toward cost reduction.
