PURPOSE:To obtain a recording image by a background method without deteriorating a life of a light source and a picture quality, by forming a white electrostatic latent image by exposing a white part by an auxiliary light source, in case when there is a white part exceeding a prescribed area. CONSTITUTION:Recording image information of an (n) line portion is stored in a line buffer memory 9. A controller 10 discriminates whether its image information is all white image information or not. When it is decided that black image information exists even one picture element (a) lines (a<n) away of the present recording scanning line, an exposure of an auxiliary light source 7 is switched to an exposure by an LED array head 3 from its time point, and the latent image of a white image of (a) lines is formed on a photosensitive drum 1. At the time of reaching the (a)-th line, the head 3 is brought to a flickering control in accordance with the recording image information and a black image latent image is formed on the photosensitive drum 1. On the other hand, when the image information is all white image information, an exposure by the head 3 is switched to an exposure by the auxiliary light source 7.
