PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of communication processing by allowing a caller side to decide the communication mode when the initial identification signal is not detected within a prescribed time after the detection of a called station identification signal or the called station identification signal is not received and the initial identification signal is not detected within a prescribed time after the line connection. CONSTITUTION:The facsimile equipment applies the facsimile communication by the communication modes G1-G3 and the mini-facsimile mode. If the initial identification signal in the modes G1-G3 is not received even after 5sec after the detection of a CED signal or 15sec elapses without detecting the CED signal, the mini-facsimile communication is selected and the modes G1, G2, G3 are selected in other cases in response to the initial identification signal in the opposite station. Thus, in the facsimile equipment having the communication modes of G1-G3 and the mini-facsimile mode, the communication mode is selected automatically in response to the reply state of the opposite station without the intervention of the operator for the mode selection.
