PURPOSE:To always measure stretch quantity with good accuracy, by forming grooves to the rear of a strip like material at a definite interval by the grooving apparatus arranged on the way of the feed route of the strip like material and detecting said grooves. CONSTITUTION:In a grooving apparatus 1, projections 6 for forming grooves Wa to the rear of a strip like material W are formed to the outer peripheral surface of a roll 5 at a definite interval l and the strip like material W is pressed to the grooving apparatus 1 by a press roll 2 to form the grooves Wa to the strip material W at the definite interval in the lateral direction thereof. Then, the grooves Wa of the strip material W are respectively detected by the detection means 3a, 3b arranged on the way of the feed route X of the strip like material W at a definite interval and the groove interval S of the strip like material W is calculated from the difference between the detection times of the detection means by a control apparatus 4, and said groove interval S and the preliminarily detected original groove interval are subjected to comparison to detect the stretch quantity alpha of the strip like material W. By this method, the stretch quantity can be always measured with good accuracy.
