A signal recording and reproducing appts. for use with a tape cassette includes a cylinder having heads mounted on it for recording and reproducing a signal on and from a magnetic tape. A pair of tape guides is movable between an unloading position remote from the cylinder and a loading position adjacent to it. The tape is withdrawn out of the tape cassette by the guides when they are moved from the unloading position to the loading position. When the tape gudies are in the loading position, an angular extent over which the tape is in contact with a nonrotatable guide element of one of the tape guides located at a living side where the tape leaves the cylinder is less than that over which the tape is in contact with a non-rotatable guide element.
