PURPOSE:To perform a stable focusing operation automatically and exactly in any cases by employing an automatic focusing operation by a presetting method when the focusing operation in a feedback system is impossible. CONSTITUTION:First, a focus searching operation is performed by a feedback method. (a) Second, a peak of an evaluation signal is detected for the detected signal. (b) If this peak is detected, then a focus is defined on this peak position so that an auto-focusing operation ends. If the peak of the evaluation signal for the detected signal is not detected, then aforementioned operations (a) and (b) are repeated at n times. (c) When the number of focus searching times attains to a set-up value N, the focus searching operations are suspended and then the autofocusing operation by a presetting method is performed on a next step N, that is, a focus is defined on a focusing position set in advance, and next the auto-focusing operation ends.
