PURPOSE:To contrive reductions in size, weight and cost, by performing a recording head turning-up/down operation and reciprocation of a carrier equipped with the recording head by a common motor. CONSTITUTION:Where a switch 21 is turned OFF, a motor 502 in a carrier 50 is reversely rotated to return the carrier 50 to a home position. At this time, when a printing head 63 is in the state of being turned down, the motor 502 is reversely rotated to separate the head 63 from a platen 7. When a projection 501b on the carrier 50 presses a contact piece 21a to turn ON the switch 21, a predetermined amount of ramp-down is effected, and the carrier 50 is stopped. Next, the carrier 50 is moved forward, and after the detection of turning-OFF of the switch 21, the motor 502 is rotated forward by a predetermined number of pulses, whereby the carrier 50 is stopped with an index pointing the first column. Meanwhile, the head 63 is turned down and up, thereby taking up a sag of a ribbon. Where a switch 21 is ON when a power source is switched ON, the motor 502 is first rotated forward, and after verifying the turning-OFF of the switch 21, the above operations are conducted.
