The invention relates to a rotary-vane vacuum pump for producing medium and high vacuums, such as is preferred for use in industry and laboratories. The pump casing, closed on its ends with crowns, is divided into two casing sections by a screen. The rotor, provided with two slots for holding slides, stretches through an off-centre aperture in the screen into both sections of the casing. Both casing sections are connected together, particularly in such a manner that there is a passage from the discharge side of the inlet-stage section particularly to the suction side of the outlet-stage section of the casing. Both casing sections holding the rotor and the slides have an oval internal cross-section of the casing. The free end of the rotor is mounted on a ball supported by the crown. The slots provided in the rotor for holding the slides are mutually offset.
