A safety coupling for connecting a shaft to a hub, for example, in a torsionally rigid fashion has a device with an inner annular chamber to which high pressure can be admitted. The disengagement of the coupling is effected by reduction of the high pressure in the annular chamber. For this purpose use is made of a release ring which is secured on the shaft and is in engagement with a closure element for the annular chamber. This closure element is designed as a release valve with a tappet which is pressed inwards by the release ring, the tappet disengaging automatically from the release ring when relief is complete and returning to its starting position ready for operation when the annular chamber is put under high pressure again.
