PURPOSE:To key in a phonogram string without paying attention to the paragraph of a Chinese sentence by scanning the phonogram string while changing the length of a scanning window, retrieving a converting dictionary and converting to a Chinese character string. CONSTITUTION:A means for retrieving a Chinese dictionary 16 by defining a pin in character string indicated by the scanning window to be a key is provided. Then, the size of the scanning window is changed by one syllable to shift a scanning position by one syllable and this scanning and the retrieval are repeated. When a relevant word of four syllables is present in the Chinese dictionary 16, the relevant word is defined to be a definitive word and when the plural relevant words of three syllables or two syllables are present in the Chinese dictionary 16, all the plural relevant wors are defined to be candidate words. When the specific syllable of the candidate word is overlapped on the candidate word of >= two words, or when there are homophones, they are all displayed, an operator selects one optimum word or a combination of >= two words to define as the definitive word. Thereby, an efficient Chinese sentence input can be attained.
