PURPOSE:To realize the gradation expression of a display panel using a ferroelectric liquid crystal which can discriminate a contrast in accordance with the direction of an electric field, by setting one polarity voltage of a second (or a first) to a voltage being in a complement relation to the other polarity voltage of a first (or a second). CONSTITUTION:Under the potential gradient given to a scanning electrode 11 and signal electrodes 12, 13, write a white (or black) is executed, and subsequently, the write voltage of black (or white) taking a complement is applied. That is, when the input signal to the signal electrode 12 becomes high in a first frame, the display area of white becomes large to a zero-size, in an intersection X0 to a threshold voltage Vth(+). Also, when the previous write state is in the display state of white in an X-X0 area, even if the input signal becomes low, since a ferroelectric liquid crystal has a memory effect, no variation is generated. In the subsequent frame, the write voltage polarity to a picture element is inverted, the input signal being in a complement relation is applied to the signal electrode 13, and a white area and a black area are set to an expected area ratio. In such a way, the gradation expression of a ferroelectric liquid crystal display panel can be realized.
