PURPOSE:To shorten an input/output time by retrieving directly the pointer breakdown part of the data base at every parentage by a mini-data base from which only a bit of pointer information is extracted. CONSTITUTION:A pointer information extracting means 2 reads out successively all records in the data base 1 which has the broken pointer information and extracts only the pointer information for the designated parentage, which the record has, to a pointer information file 3. The file 3 is inputted to a pointer information sorting means 4 and sorted at every designated parentage according to the pointer value of a parent record included in the pointer information. A diagnosing data base generating means 6 generates a pointer information diagnosing data base 7 from a sorted pointer information file 5. The base 7 follows the pointers from the parent record to a child record and from the child record to the next child record by a breakdown part detecting means 8, and a part where the pointer is broken is detected.
